On 21st October 2026, EECC Global researchers and implementers from Tanzania, Ethiopia and Sweden led a webinar explaining the evidence behind Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC), the results of large-scale implementation in Tanzania, and practical ways to introduce EECC in hospitals and health systems.
If you missed the live event, you can now watch the full recording below.
What did we cover?
The webinar followed the journey from understanding the scale of critical illness to putting EECC into practice.
The Need: Fitsum Kifle (6m 34s)
Findings from the ACIOS study, which revealed that approximately one in eight adult hospital patients are critically ill, many of them receiving care outside intensive care units. The study also identified substantial gaps in the delivery of essential care.
The Solution: Otto Schell (17m 03s)
An introduction to EECC and how it helps hospitals ensure that all critically ill patients receive the basic life-saving care they need, regardless of their diagnosis or where they are being treated.
The Impact: Karima Khalid (27m 50s)
Lessons from implementing EECC across 79 hospitals in Tanzania, where the programme was associated with a 31% reduction in inpatient mortality. The presentation explored what implementation involved and what has been learned from delivering EECC at scale.
Getting Started: Otto Schell (36m 40s)
Practical steps that clinicians, hospital leaders and others can take to begin introducing EECC in their own settings.
The webinar was hosted by EECC Global President Tim Baker and concluded with questions and discussion.
Whether you're new to EECC or already involved in its implementation, we hope the recording provides useful evidence, insights and ideas for improving care for critically ill patients.
