Tune In: Karima Khalid Discusses Critical Illness in African Hospitals on Channel Africa

Karima Khalid, founder of EECC Global, joins Channel Africa: The African Perspective to discuss new research on critical illness care across the continent.

The African Critical Illness Outcomes Study (ACIOS), published in The Lancet on 28th February, is the first continent-wide analysis of critical illness in African hospitals. The findings highlight major gaps in the availability of essential emergency and critical care (EECC), a package of low-cost, life-saving interventions such as oxygen therapy, IV fluids, and vital signs monitoring.

Key findings include:

  • 1 in 8 inpatients are critically ill

  • 69% are treated in general wards, not critical care units

  • 56% do not receive basic EECC interventions

  • 21% die within seven days, compared to 2.7% of non-critically ill patients

Karima Khalid explains the importance of integrating EECC into routine hospital care and discusses how these feasible, low-cost interventions can improve outcomes for critically ill patients.

Channel Africa is an international radio station run by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) since 1994. The station broadcasts live on Satellite and Internet with its languages including Chinyanja, Kiswahili, English, French, and Portuguese.
